Fiji's constant price GDP is provisionally estimated at $2,871.0 million for calendar
year 2007. Of this $338.3 million or 11.8 per cent was contributed by non-monetary production;
that is, from the own account activities in the Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing and Construction
sectors and the notional owner occupied dwellings in the Real Estate sub-sector. When compared to
2006 when the constant price GDP was $3,073.0 million, 2007 shows a decline of $201.9 million.
Per capita GDP at constant price for 2007 was $3,442.5 compared to 2006 when it was $3,702.4.
Composition of GDP
The Wholesale and Retail Trade and Hotels and Restaurants sector and, the Community, Social and
Personal Services sector, each accounted for 18.0 per cent of the constant price GDP in 2007.
The Manufacturing sector accounted for 15 per cent. The Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing sector
and the Finance, Insurance, Real Estate and business services sector, each accounted for 14.0 per
cent. This was followed by the Transport and Communications sector, which accounted for 13.0 per
cent. The Construction, Electricity and Water and Mining and Quarrying sectors accounted for the
remaining 9.0 per cent.
Growth in GDP
The economy in 2007 declined by 6.6 per cent as compared to 2006 when it registered a growth of
3.4 per cent.
Sectors contributing to the decline in 2007 were the Agriculture; Forestry and Fishing; Mining and
Quarrying; Construction; Wholesale and Retail Trade; Transport and Communication; Finance,
Insurance, Real Estate and Business Services and Community, Social, Personal and Household
Services.
Marginal growths were recorded in the Manufacturing and Electricity and Water sectors.
Performance of Industrial Sectors
Agriculture, Forestry, Fishing and Subsistence sector accounted for 14.0 per cent of the GDP in
2007 and stood at $432.8 million. Compared to 2006, when it stood at $458.8 million and registered
a decline of 0.5 per cent, 2007 declined by 5.7 per cent or $26.0 million.
Mining and Quarrying sector accounted for 0.01 per cent of the GDP in 2007 and stood at $0.3
million. Compared to 2006, when it stood at $15.1 million and registered a decline of 49.8 per
cent, 2007 declined by $14.8 million or 97.9 per cent.
Manufacturing sector accounted for 15.0 per cent of the GDP in 2007 and stood at $441.0 million.
Compared to 2006, when it stood at $440.0 million and registered a growth of 2.7 per cent, 2007
registered a marginal growth of 0.2 per cent or $1.0 million.
Electricity and Water sector accounted for 4.0 per cent of the GDP in 2007 and stood at $122.6
million. Compared to 2006, when it stood at $122.1 million and registered a growth of 6.7 per cent,
2007 grew by $0.5 million or 0.4 per cent.
Construction sector accounted for 5.0 per cent of the GDP in 2007 and stood at
$152.3 million. Compared to 2006, when it stood at $191.7 million and registered a growth of 8.0
per cent, 2007 declined by $39.4 million or 20.6 per cent.
Wholesale and Retail Trade and the Hotels and Restaurants sector accounted for 18.0 per cent of
the GDP in 2007 and stood at $528.8 million. Compared to 2006, when it stood at $556.6 million and
registered a growth of 4.6 per cent, 2007 declined by $27.8 million or 5.0 per cent.
Transport and Communications sector accounted for 13.0 per cent of the GDP in 2007 and stood at
$391.8 million. Compared to 2006, when it stood at $408.3 million and registered a decline of 3.3
per cent, 2007 declined by $16.5 million or 4.0 per cent.
Finance, Insurance, Real Estate and Business Services sector accounted for 14.0 per cent of the
GDP in 2007 and stood at $420.6 million. Compared to 2006, when it stood at $428.1 million and
registered a growth of 15.7 per cent, 2007 declined by $7.5 million or 1.8 per cent.
Community, Social and Personal Services sector accounted for 18.0 per cent of the GDP in 2007. Of this:
Personal and household services sector accounted for 2.4 per cent of the GDP in 2007 and stood at
$68.3 million. Compared to 2006 when it stood at $67.0 million and registered a growth of 2.5 per
cent, 2007 grew by 1.9 per cent.
Social and community services sector which includes General government accounted for 15.4 per cent
of the GDP in 2007 and stood at $441.1 million. Compared to 2006 when it stood at $524.8 million
and registered a growth of 8.9 per cent, 2007 declined by 16.0 per cent. Also included in this
sub-sector is the Audio visual industry which contracted in 2007 generating 611 full- equivalent
(FTE) jobs compared to 3800 in 2006.
