International Trade in Services Quarter 1 2011

Provisionaldata on Fiji’s import of services for quarter 1 2011 was $227.2 million and export was $395.8 million

Compared to the previous corresponding quarter, import of services decreased by $9.7 million (4.1%) whilst export increased by $32.9 million (9.1 %).

The trade in services surplus in quarter 1 2011 amounted to $168.6 million, $42.6 million (33.8%) more than quarter 1 2010 surplus of $126.0 million

Services recording surpluses were:

  • Travel $173.3 million mainly due to personal travel
  • Government services $29.4 million due to foreign government expenditures in Fiji
  • Manufacturing services $14.5 million due to goods processed in Fiji
  • Maintenance and repair services $0.6 million due to repair of goods
  • Financial services $0.2 million
Services recording deficits were:
  • Telecommunication, computer and information services $23.7 million mainly due to telecommunication
  • Insurance $13.1 million due to insurance paid on imported goods
  • Transportation $6.5 million mainly driven by sea freight
  • Other business services $4.9 million due to operating leasing
  • Charges for the use of intellectual property $1.0 million due to royalties and license fees
  • Personal, cultural & recreational activities $0.2 million
