International Trade in Services, Quarter 1 2009

Provisional data on Fiji’s import of services for quarter 1 2009 was $221.4 million and export was $321.3 million

Compared to the previous corresponding quarter, import of services increased by $11.5 million (5.5%) whilst export decreased by $47.9 million (13.0%).

The trade in services surplus in quarter 1, 2009 amounted to $99.9 million, $59.4 million (37.3%) less than quarter 1 2008 surplus of $159.3 million.

In quarter 1 2009, services recording surpluses were:
  • Travel $128.2 million mainly due to personal travel
  • Communication $0.8 million due to telecommunication
  • Financial $0.1
  • Government services $7.0 million


  • Services recording deficits were:
  • Transportation $13.8 million mainly driven by sea freight
  • Construction $0.1 million
  • Insurance $10.8 million
  • Computer and information $5.1 million due to data processing and database services
  • Royalties and license fee $0.6 million
  • Other business $5.5 million mainly due to operational leasing services and miscellaneous business and professional services provided
  • Personal, cultural and recreational activities $0.3 million
