The Industrial Production Index (IPI), is one of "constant price" and do not reflect changes in prices. It is based on "representative" physical output from each industrial group.

Quarter 4 2007

Provisional All Group Index for Quarter 4, 2007 stood at 143.4.

Compared to the previous quarter a 6.5% decrease was registered in the All Group Index. Decreases were registered in the indices of food, beverage & tobacco; miscellaneous chemical products and cement & concrete products whilst increases were recorded in the indices of mining and quarrying; garments & footwear; wood & wood products including furniture & upholstery; paper & paper products, printing & publishing; structural metal products and electricity and water.

Compared to previous corresponding quarter a 5.1% increase was registered in the All Item Group Index. Increases were registered in the indices of food, beverage & tobacco; wood & wood products including furniture & upholstery; paper and paper products; printing & publishing and electricity and water whilst decreases were registered in the indices of mining & quarrying; garment & footwear; miscellaneous chemical products; cement & concrete products and structural metal products.

The All-Group Index including sugar shows a decline when compared to the previous quarter but an increase when compared to the previous corresponding quarter. The All Group Index excluding sugar shows an increase when compared to the previous and also to the previous corresponding quarter. Since sugar production is seasonal, most of the crushing is done in the later half of the year. Due to the high weight sugar has, a slight increase or a decrease in its production has an impact on the overall index as well as in the sub-group index.

Annual

Provisional All Group Index for 2007 stood at 130.0

Compared to 2006 the IPI registered at 1.5% decrease in the All-Group Index. Decreases were registered in the indices of mining and quarrying; miscellaneous chemical products; cement & concrete products and structural metal products whilst increases were recorded in the indices of food, beverages & tobacco; garment & footwear; wood & wood products including furniture & upholstery; paper & paper products, printing & publishing and electricity and water.
