  • Total visitor arrivals for February 2010 [34,392] increased by 9.9% when compared to the same month in 2009 [31,286].
  • Most of the visitor arrivals were from Australia with 40.3% [13,869] followed by the United States of America with 9.7% [3,344] and New Zealand with 9.6% [3,313].
  • People arriving for holiday purposes contributed 71.1% of the total visitor arrivals and 10.1% came to visit their friends or relatives, while 18.8% persons visited the Fiji Islands for other reasons.
  • Cruise ship passengers for the month of February 2010 showed an increase of 2.3% from 6,647 in 2009 to 6,797.
Decreases for February 2010 when compared to 2009 were recorded for visitors from Japan down [48.7% to 1,117]; Canada down [20.6% to 1,028]; the United States of America down [12.6% to 3,344]; the United Kingdom down [12.0% to 2,366] and Pacific Island down [5.4% to 2,810].

In the moving twelve monthly numbers ending February 2010, the total number of visitors to Fiji decreased by 1.4% compared with the same period in 2009. Visitors from Japan decreased by 39.4%; Canada [23.4%]; the United Kingdom [17.9%]; the United States of America [14.6%]; New Zealand [4.4%] and Pacific Islands [1.6%].

Increases were recorded for visitors from Australia [9.4%] and Continental Europe [4.6%].

In the six monthly numbers ending February 2010, the number of visitor arrivals showed a 7.5% increase over the corresponding period in 2009, up from 261,197 to 280,901.

The average length of stay for visitors in February 2010 was 9.4 days with the Canadians staying the longest with 15.8 days. This was followed by Pacific Island with 13.8 days; New Zealand 9.2 days; Continental Europe 8.4 days; the United Kingdom and the United States of America with 8.2 days, while Australian visitors who make up more than 40% of the total visitors stayed for 8.9 days. The Japanese visitors stayed the shortest with 6.7 days. Other visitors from our major markets stayed between 6.7 to 15.8 days.
