2008-2009 Household Income and Expenditure Survey [HIES]

The 2008-2009 HIES was planned and conducted by the Household Survey Unit of the Fiji Islands Bureau of Statistics [FIBOS].

Household surveys are a convenient and perhaps the only means of obtaining socio-economic information needed for the formulation of Government’s economic and social plans and policies.

Key objectives of the survey are:

  • to revise the weights for the Consumer Price Index [CPI]
  • to update consumption data in National Accounts
  • to provide data for Poverty Analysis

  • The HIES also provides other important information. A measure of living standards in the urban and rural areas on the basis of household consumption expenditure is an example. Similarly information relating to housing conditions and availability.
