INTERNATIONAL INVESTMENT POSITION - September 2014

All values in this release are in Fiji Dollars (FJD).

Provisional data shows that Fiji’s Net International Investment Position (IIP) as at 30th September 2014 was -$6,679.5 million. This means that the value of Fiji's liabilities exceeded the value of its assets. The figure stood at -$5,902.1 million a year earlier.

Fiji’s international liability was valued at $9,766.8 million as at 30th September 2014. The breakdown by liability type was as follows:

  1. Direct Investment- $7,249.6 million (74.2%);
  2. Portfolio Investment- $338.6 million (3.5%) and
  3. Other Investment- $2178.6 million (22.3%).

The breakdown by instruments was as follows:

  • Loans ($1,277.2 million);
  • Other accounts payable ($378.0 million);
  • Currency and deposits ($331.8 million) and
  • Special drawing rights ($191.6 million).

Fiji’s international asset was valued at $3,087.3 million as at 30th June 2014. The breakdown by asset type was as follows:

  1. Direct Investment- $101.1 million (3.3%);
  2. Portfolio Investment- $140.1 million (4.5%);
  3. Other Investment- $1,171.3 million (38.0%).

The breakdown by instruments was as follows:

  • Currency and deposits ($2,326.4 million);
  • Other accounts receivable ($262.0 million) and
  • Loans ($108.8 million)

iv. Reserve Assets- $1,674.8 million (54.2%).

 

 

Net Foreign Debt (NFD)

NFD is the amount derived through the following calculation – Foreign Assets less Foreign Liabilities.

As at 30th September 2014, Fiji’s net foreign debt was -$82.8 million. This was a decrease of $2.1 million from the 30th September 2013 figure of -$84.9 million due to an increase in Loans. Some relevant details are presented in Table 1.

 

 

 

Net Foreign Equity (NFE)

NFE reflects the total value of Fijian assets in foreign ownership minus the total value of overseas assets owned by Fijians.

As at 30th September 2014, Fiji’s net foreign equity (shares) was -$6,598.7 million. This was an increase of $613.4 million from the 30th September 2013 figure of -$5,985.3 million. This indicates that there was an increase in equity liabilities (foreign investment in Fiji) than assets (Fiji’s investment abroad). Some relevant details are presented in Table 2.

 

 

Administrative and survey data have been used to compile the International Investment Position in accordance with the 6th edition of the International Monetary Fund’s Balance of Payments Manual.
