December Quarter 2015
1. REGULAR OPERATION OF LOCAL AIRLINES
International Flights
Fiji’s local airlines carried a total of 292,732 international passengers and generated a total of 1,173,150 thousand of revenue passenger kilometers in the December quarter of 2015. A paying passenger flying one kilometer creates one revenue passenger kilometer. In terms of capacity, the airlines had 1,434,325 thousand of available seat kilometers. One seat (empty or filled) flying one kilometer is an available seat kilometer.
Compared to the September quarter of 2015, the airlines transported 1.5 per cent less passengers and also recorded a 0.3 per cent reduction in revenue passenger kilometers. The 297,081 international passengers flown in the September quarter of 2015, generated 1,176,470 thousand of revenue passenger kilometers while capacity was 1,446,876 thousand of available seat kilometers.
When compared to the December quarter of 2014, the airlines transported 8.6 per cent more passengers and also recorded a 7.7 per cent increase in revenue passenger kilometers. In terms of capacity, a 8.4 per cent increase was recorded. The 269,447 international passengers flown in the December quarter of 2014 generated a total of 1,089,261 thousand of revenue passenger kilometers with the capacity at 1,322,774 thousand of available seat kilometers.
The passenger load factor i.e Passenger Kilometer performed divided by Capacity, increased by 1.0 percentage points from 81.0 per cent in the September quarter of 2015 to 82.0 per cent in the reporting quarter.
2. LOCAL AIRLINES: REVENUE TONNE KILOMETER PERFORMED
International Flights
Fiji’s local airlines carried a total of 143,820 thousand tonne kilometer of revenue earning passenger, freight and mail in the December quarter of 2015. The total airline load capacity was 186,410 thousand tonne kilometers.
Compared to the September quarter of 2015, the airlines carried 1.0 per cent more revenue earning passenger, freight and mail. There was a 1.6 per cent decrease in its load capacity. A total of 142,410 thousand tonne kilometer of revenue earning passenger, freight and mail were carried in the September quarter of 2015 and capacity was 189,455 thousand tonne kilometers.
When compared to the December quarter of 2014, the airlines carried 8.4 per cent more revenue earning passenger, freight and mail and also recorded a 8.9 per cent increased in its load capacity. A total of 132,655 thousand tonne kilometer of revenue earning passenger, freight and mail were performed in the December quarter of 2014 and capacity was 171,248 thousand tonne kilometers.
The capacity load factor (Revenue Tonne Kilometer Performed divided by Capacity) increased by 2.0 percentage point from 75.0 per cent in the September quarter of 2015 to 77.0 per cent in the reporting quarter.
ANNUAL 2015
The total number of passengers carried by local airlines on international flights in 2015 was 1,102,620. This is an increase of 6.6 per cent compared to the 1,033,869 passengers carried in 2014.
Compared to 2014 the total revenue tonne-kilometer performed increased by 4.6 per cent from 519,389 thousand to 543,480 thousand for international flights. The total tonne-kilometer available increased by 5.2 per cent from 677,737 thousand to 712,668 thousand for international flights.

Figures provided in this release reflect the performance of the local airline industry during the reporting period. They are to be viewed from a Production and Capacity perspective. Production takes into account the airline seat take-up together with cargo load while capacity covers available airline seats, cargo carrying capability and distance covered.
