March Quarter 2014


1. REGULAR OPERATION OF LOCAL AIRLINES

International Flights

Fiji’s local airlines carried a total of 229,651 international passengers and generated a total of 958,017 thousand of revenue passenger kilometers in the March quarter of 2014. A paying passenger flying one kilometer creates one revenue passenger kilometer. In terms of capacity, the airlines had 1,224,486 thousand of available seat kilometers. One seat (empty or filled) flying one kilometer is an available seat kilometer.

Compared to the December quarter of 2013, the airlines transported 10.1 per cent less passengers and recorded 3.9 per cent decline in revenue passenger kilometers. The 255,481 international passengers flown in the December quarter of 2013 generated 997,174 thousand of revenue passenger kilometers while capacity were 1,262,120 thousand of available seat kilometers.

When compared to the March quarter of 2013, the airlines transported 1.8 per cent more passengers and also recorded a 2.0 per cent increase in revenue passenger kilometers. In terms of capacity, 5.0 per cent decline was recorded. The 225,524 international passengers flown in the March quarter of 2013 generated a total of 939,598 thousand of revenue passenger kilometers with the capacity at 1,289,077 thousand of available seat kilometers.

The passenger load factor i.e Passenger Kilometer performed divided by Capacity, decreased by 1.0 percentage points from 79.0 per cent in the December quarter of 2013 to 78.0 per cent in the reporting period.

2. LOCAL AIRLINES: REVENUE TONNE KILOMETER PERFORMED

International Flights

Fiji’s local airlines carried a total of 115,346 thousand tonne kilometer of revenue earning passenger, freight and mail in the March quarter of 2014. The total airline load capacity was 158,503 thousand tonne kilometers.

Compared to the December quarter of 2013, the airlines carried 3.9 per cent less revenue earning passenger, freight and mail. There was a 0.6 per cent increase in its load capacity. A total of 120,050 thousand tonne kilometer of revenue earning passenger, freight and mail were carried in the December quarter of 2013 and capacity was 157,480 thousand tonne kilometers.

When compared to the March quarter of 2013, the airlines carried 3.4 per cent more revenue earning passenger, freight and mail and a decrease of 1.6 per cent in its load capacity. A total of 111,592 thousand tonne kilometer of revenue earning passenger, freight and mail were performed in the March quarter of 2013 and capacity was 161,068 thousand tonne kilometers.

The capacity load factor, Revenue Tonne Kilometer Performed divided by Capacity, decreased by 3.0 percentage points from 76.0 per cent in the December quarter of 2013 to 73.0 per cent in the reporting quarter.

Figures provided in this release reflect the performance of the local airline industry during the reporting period. They are to be viewed from a Production and Capacity perspective. Production takes into account the airline seat take-up together with cargo load while capacity covers available airline seats, cargo carrying capability and distance covered.
