BUILDING STATISTICS - September Quarter 2012

Building Statistics covers Building Permits and Completion Certificates issued and is compiled using information supplied by the City, Town Councils and Rural Local Authorities.

Users of Building Statistics should exercise caution in interpreting statistics relating to the Building Permits and the Completion Certificates issued for specific periods due to the time lag between the Building Permits issued and the Completion Certificates issued. Thus, proper care should be taken when using these figures.

Building Permits Issued

A total of 362 Building Permits for construction work valued at $84.1 million were issued in the September 2012 quarter. 

Compared to the June 2012 quarter, a 2.3 per cent increase was recorded in the number of permits issued but the total value for construction works approved decreased significantly by 74.8 per cent. 

When compared to the September 2011 quarter, the number of permits issued and their value were 0.8 per cent and 241.7 per cent higher respectively.

Of the $84.1 million of building works approved, 15.0 per cent were for Private Dwellings, 81.9 per cent were for Other Buildings and the remaining 3.1 per cent were for Alterations and Miscellaneous work. Building Permits issued for Commercial, Hotels and Religious Buildings contributed significantly to the Non Private dwellings component.

Of the total number of Building Permits issued, 39.5 per cent with a value of $61.6 million were issued for the Central Division, 53.0 per cent with a value of $21.5 million were issued for the Western Division and 7.5 per cent with a value of $1.0 million were issued for the Northern and Eastern Divisions.



Completion Certificates Issued

A total of 137 Completion Certificates with a value of $12.6 million were issued in the September 2012 quarter.

Compared to the June 2012 quarter, this was 3.0 per cent higher in the number of completion certificates issued but a decrease of 13.3 per cent in their value. 

When compared to the September 2011 quarter, the number of completion certificates issued was 20.2 per cent higher but their values were 43.4 per cent lower. 

Of the $12.6 million in building works completed, 46.3 per cent were for Private Dwellings 45.5 per cent were for Other Buildings and the remaining 8.2 per cent were for Alterations and Miscellaneous work. Completion Certificates issued for Commercial and Educational Buildings contributed significantly to the Non Private dwellings component.

Of the total number of Completion Certificates issued, 41.6 per cent with a value of $3.5 million were issued for the Central Division, 49.6 per cent with a value of $8.5 million were issued for the Western Division and 8.8 per cent with a value of $0.5 million were issued for the Northern and Eastern Divisions.
