Industrial Production Index

FBoS Release No.87, 2015
23rd December 2015

The All Group Industrial Production Index (IPI) for the September quarter of 2015 stood at 124.0. The index is compared to those of earlier periods in order to gauge changing volumes of output from industrial production. For instance, the September quarter of 2015 index of 124.0 is 24.0 per cent higher than the base year (2011) index of 100.0.

ipiSep15a

Compared to the June quarter of 2015 a 13.9 per cent increase was registered in the All Group Index due to higher volumes of production in frozen poultry, meat, canned fish, dairy products, ice-cream, rice milling, flour milling, other grain mill products, sugar, sugar confectionery, starch products, other food not elsewhere classified (n.e.c), animal feed, alcoholic spirits, beer, soft drinks, mineral water, yaqona, tobacco, wearing apparel, paper & paper board, other articles of paper and paper board, printing, fertilizer, agrochemicals, paints & varnishes, soap & detergent, other chemical products, pharmaceuticals, rubber tyres & tubes, plastic products, glass and glass products, cement, concrete products, cutting, shaping of stone, basic metal and casting of metals.

Compared to the September quarter of 2014 a 7.7 per cent decrease was recorded in the All Group Index. Driving this decline were lower volumes of production in mining and quarrying, fruit & vegetables, edible oil & coconut oil, dairy products, ice cream, rice milling, flour milling , other grain mill products, bread, cakes, biscuits, sugar, wearing apparel, paper, fertilizer, agrochemical, paints & varnishes, soap & detergent, other chemical products, pharmaceuticals, other fabricated metal products, coachwork, building of ships and floating structure, manufacturing of furniture and water.

The All Group Index including sugar showed an increase when compared to the June quarter of 2015 but a decline when compared to the September quarter of 2014. The All Group Index excluding sugar showed an increase when compared to the June quarter of 2015 but recorded a decline when compared to the September quarter of 2014. Since sugar production is seasonal, most of the crushing is done in the latter half of the year. Given the significant weight for sugar in the index, an increase or decrease in its production volume is bound to impact the overall index.
