[Base: June 2011 = 100.0]

FBoS Release No: 46, 2015

17th August 2015

The Fiji Bureau of Statistics (FBoS) has re-referenced, re-weighted and linked the Building Material Price Index (BMPI) from 2008 to 2011. This means that the item list and their weights have been updated based on data collected from the 2011 Census of Construction. Thus, the base used henceforth shall be 2011=100.0.

The BMPI is compiled to measure movements in the price of building materials. A regular re-weighting of the index is necessary to ensure that its movement closely tracks changes in the prices of building materials.

Commodities have been assigned weights based on the relative importance of commodities to the total building materials used in the Construction Sector. The combined weight of all materials equals 1000.0. Table 1 compares the two base weights and provides the weight change between 2008 and 2011.

Cement and related materials accounted for the highest weight of 375.9 in 2011 and 361.4 in 2008. Electrical products ranked second with weights of 130.9 and 144.0 in 2011 and 2008 respectively. Door and Window frame ranks third with a weight of 101.0 in 2011 replacing Iron and Steel, which held that position in the 2008 base, with a weight of 99.6. The remaining products and their weights are as follows: Iron and Steel with a weight of 94.8, Paint and Glass with a weight of 79.8, Plumbing ware with a weight of 79.5, Wood and Related Material with a weight of 73.4 while Floor and Wall Tiles have an assigned weight of 64.7.
