Findings from the Quarter 3, 2016 survey of Licensed Hotels, Resorts and Lodging Houses are presented in this release.

Compared to Quarter 3, 2015

  • The number of Rooms Available increased by 1.0% (10,137).
  • The number of Rooms Sold decreased by 12.6% (73,868).
  • The Room Occupancy Rate decreased by 8.2 percentage points to 52.4%.
  • The number of Beds Available increased by 4.0%.
  • The number of Beds Sold decreased by 13.1%.
  • The Bed Occupancy Rate decreased by 9.1 percentage points to 45.9%.
  • Takings from Accommodation, Sales of Food, Liquor, Telephone and Other Miscellaneous Charges totaled $287.7 million, a decrease of 4.6%.
  • Paid Employment in the Hotel Sector increased by 0.5%.

  • The Room Occupancy Rate decreased to 52.4 % from 60.3% in the same period last year.
  • The Room Occupancy Rate for the last 6 years has been in the range of (52.4%) to (60.3%).

Map 1: Key Points

  • The Suva Area recorded the highest Occupancy Rate compared to other Areas.
  • The Other Areas experienced a slight decrease, whereas Coral Coast, Lautoka and Northern Areas recorded a major decrease, which may be due to post Severe Tropical Cyclone Winston impacts.

Map 2: Key Points

A large number of visitors from Australia stayed in the Coral Coast, Nadi and Mamanuca Area.

A large number of visitors from the United States of America stayed in the Northern and Other Areas, including Kadavu.

The Suva Area had the highest number of visitors from Other countries and majority were from Japan and other Pacific Islands.
