Findings from the Quarter 4, 2015 survey of Licensed Hotels, Resorts and Lodging Houses are presented in this release.

Key Points:

Room Capacity for Quarter 4, 2015 and Annual

  • The number of Rooms Available increased by 0.2% (1,600).
  • The number of Rooms sold increased by 3.1% (15,193).
  • The Room Occupancy Rate increased by 1.6 percentage points to 52.5%.
  • Total Rooms Available and Rooms sold increased by 1.6% and 6.7% respectively.
  • Total Room Occupancy Rate increased by 2.5 percentage points.

Bed Capacity for Quarter 4, 2015 and Annual

  • The number of Beds Available and Beds sold increased by 0.7% and 3.3% respectively.
  • The Beds Occupancy Rate increased by 1.2 percentage points to 48.0%
  • Total Beds Available and Beds Sold increased by 2.1% and 5.8% respectively.
  • Total Beds Occupancy Rate increased by 1.6 percentage points.

Overall Takings and Employment

  • Takings from Accommodation, Sales of Food, Liquor, Telephone and Other Miscellaneous Charges totaled $240.7 million, an increase of 6.6%.
  • Total turnover recorded in 2015 was $956.7 million, an increase of 9.1%.

Employment increases

  • Paid Employment in the Hotel Sector in Quarter 4, 2015 increased by 4.5% compared to Quarter 4, 2014.

  • The Room Occupancy Rate of 52.5% has been the highest for the past 5 years.
  • Room Occupancy increased to 52.5% from 50.9% in the previous corresponding Qtr in 2014.
  • The Occupancy Rates for the last 5 years has been in the range of (48.0%) and (52.5%).

  • The Room Occupancy Rates in Nadi Area shows a slight decrease whereas other Areas it increased compared to Quarter 4, 2014.
  • Fourth Quarter data for the Nadi area shows a slight decrease to 58.7% from 60.1% in 2014.

Map 2: Key Points

  • Australians made up the highest percentage of visitors to the Coral Coast in Quarter 4, 2015.
  • Visitors from the United States of America made up the highest percentage of occupants in hotels of the Northern Division and other islands including Kadavu.
  • Visitors from Japan, Other Countries and Pacific Islands made up the highest percentage of visitors to the Suva Area.
