Findings from the Quarter 4, 2014 survey of Licensed Hotels, Resorts and Lodging Houses are presented in this release.

Key Points:

Room Capacity for Quarter 4 and 2014

  • The number of Rooms Available increased by 1.7% (15,917).
  • The number of Rooms sold increased by 2.8% (13,101).
  • The Room Occupancy Rate increased by 0.6 percentage points to 50.7%.
  • Total Rooms Available and Rooms sold increased by 1.4% and 4.1% respectively.
  • Total Room Occupancy Rate increased by 2.0 percentage points in 2014.

Bed Capacity for Quarter 4 and 2014

  • The number of Beds Available and Beds sold increased by 4.4% and 3.4% respectively.
  • The Beds Occupancy Rate decreased by 0.4 percentage points to 45.7%
  • Total Beds Available and Beds Sold increased by 3.5% and 4.5% respectively.
  • Total Beds Occupancy Rate increased by 0.4 percentage points in 2014.

Overall Takings and Employment

  • Takings from Accommodation, Sales of Food, Liquor, Telephone and Other Miscellaneous Charges totaled $223.6 million, an increase of 6.5%.
  • Total turnover recorded in 2014 was $875.2 million, an increase of 4.8%.

Employment increases

  • Paid Employment in the Hotel Sector in Quarter 4, 2014 increased by 0.4% compared to Quarter 4, 2013.

  • The 2014 Qtr 4 Room Occupancy Rate of 50.7% has been the highest for the past 6 years.
  • Room Occupancy increased to 50.7% from 50.1% in the previous corresponding Qtr in 2013.
  • The Occupancy Rates for the last 6 years has been in the range of (46.1%) and (50.7%).

Map 1: Key Points

  • The Quarter 4, 2014 Room Occupancy Rates in Suva, Nadi and Mamanuca areas increased compared to Quarter 4, 2013, except for the Coral Coast, Lautoka, Northern and Other areas.
  • Fourth Quarter data for the Nadi area shows a steady increase from 53.3% in 2012 to 59.6% in 2014.

  • Australians made up the highest percentage of visitors to the Coral Coast in Quarter 4, 2014.
  • Visitors from the United States of America made up the highest percentage of occupants in hotels of the Northern Division and other islands including Kadavu.
  • Visitors from Japan and the Other Pacific Islands made up the highest percentage of visitors to the Suva Area.
