Room Capacity for Quarter 4, 2016 and Annual

  • The number of Rooms Available increased by 1.8% (15,525).
  • The number of Rooms sold decreased by 0.8% (3,862).
  • The Room Occupancy Rate decreased by 1.4 percentage points to 54.3%.
  • Total Rooms Available and Rooms Sold decreased by 2.2% and 8.0% respectively.
  • Total Room Occupancy Rate decreased by 3.3 percentage points in 2016.

Bed Capacity for Quarter 4, 2016 and Annual

  • The number of Beds Available increased by 0.6% (12,526).
  • The number of Beds Sold decreased by 2.2% (23,678).
  • The Beds Occupancy Rate decreased by 1.5 percentage points to 50.0%
  • Total Beds Available and Beds Sold decreased by 1.4% and 9.1% respectively.
  • Total Beds Occupancy Rate decreased by 3.9 percentage points in 2016.

Overall Takings and Employment

  • Takings from Accommodation, Sales of Food, Liquor, Telephone and Other Miscellaneous Charges totaled $236.0 million, a decreased of 1.6%.
  • Total turnover recorded in 2016 was $893.0 million, a decreased of 6.4%.

Employment increases

  • Paid Employment in the Hotel Sector in Quarter 4, 2016 decreased by 1.2% compared to Quarter 4, 2015.

  • The Room Occupancy Rate of 55.7% has been the highest for the past 5 years.
  • Room Occupancy decreased from 55.7% to 54.3% in the previous corresponding Quarter in 2016.
  • The Occupancy Rates for the last 5 years has been in the range of (48.0%) and (55.7%).

  • The Suva Area recorded the highest Occupancy Rate compared to other Areas.
  • Fourth Quarter data for the Nadi area shows a slight decrease to 56.2% from 60.5% in 2015.

Map 2: Key Points

  • Australians made up the highest percentage of visitors to the Coral Coast, Nadi and Mamanuca Areas in Quarter 4, 2016.
  • Visitors from the United States of America made up the highest percentage of occupants in hotels of the Northern and other islands, including Kadavu.
  • The Suva Area had the highest number of visitors from Other countries and majority were from Japan and other Pacific Islands.
