VISITOR ARRIVALS – 2012

 2012 Highlights:

  • Visitor arrivals in 2012 totalled 660,590, a 2.1% decrease compared to a year earlier.
  • Australia continued to be the major source of visitors to Fiji in 2012, accounting for 51.1% of total arrivals.  Such a continued buoyant performance underlines Fiji’s popularity as a holiday destination for Australians.
  • Australia [337,291], New Zealand [106,122], the United States of America [56,478], Pacific Islands [38,886] and Continental Europe [29,327] were Fiji’s top five visitor source markets.  They accounted for 86% of total international visitor arrivals in 2012.
  • People arriving for holiday purposes contributed 74.6% of the total visitor arrivals, 8.3% came to visit their friends or relatives, while 17.1% visited Fiji for other reasons.

Table 1 below presents arrival numbers by country for the years 2010 - 2012.

Figure 1 below is a graphical representation of Visitor Arrivals by Country for the year 2011 and 2012.

The July visitor arrival number of 69,108 was the highest in 2012, followed by the months of September and August with increases of 66,379 and 64,827 respectively.

Arrivals from Australia peaked in September with 36,107 visitors, while arrivals from New Zealand, the United States of America and Canada peaked in July with 14,537, 6,463 and 1,433 respectively, with visitor numbers from Continental Europe [2,932] peaked in August.

 

Figure 2 below is a graphical representation of Monthly Visitor Arrivals by Country for the year 2012.

The December 2012 average length of stay for visitors was 9.9 days, with the Japanese visitors staying for the longest average duration of 27.1 days.  This was followed by Pacific Islands with 20.5 days; Canada 12.4 days; the United Kingdom 11.8 days; Continental Europe 10.2 days; New Zealand 9.3 days while Australian visitors who make up more than 50% of the total visitors stayed for 8.3 days.  The American visitors stayed the shortest with 7.7 days.  Other visitors from our major markets stayed between 7.7 to 27.1 days.

 

The number of Fiji Citizens emigrating in 2012 was 3,691 a decrease of 4.5% over the 2011 figure of 3,866.

 

Arrivals of Fiji passport holders permanently residing overseas was 29,907 compared to 39,378 in 2011.

 

Other highlights for 2012:

 

  • Resident arrivals decreased by 1.2% to 121,823.
  • Resident departures increased by 0.1% to 131,833.
  • Air transit passengers passed through Fiji in 2012, increased by 2.4% to 61,126.
  • Cruise-ship passengers increased by 36.2% to 80,003.
