PROVISIONAL VISITOR ARRIVALS - May 2015

Provisional numbers show that visitor arrivals for May 2015 totaled 60,496 an increase of 7.1% compared to a year earlier. 

 

There were increases in the number of visitors from the following countries; China [1,651 or 98.6% to 3,326]; Australia [880 or 3.0% to 30,303]; New Zealand [824 or 8.5% to 10,467]; Rest of Asia [336 or 42.5% to 1,127]; Pacific Islands [321 or 9.8% to 3,592]; the United States of America [221 or 4.1% to 5,610] and Canada [108 or 11.7% to 1,029].

 

However, decreases were recorded in the number of visitors from Other Countries [down 148 or 25.8% to 426]; Continental Europe [down 102 or 4.1% to 2,382]; South Korea [down 32 or 6.0% to 502]; United Kingdom [down 15 or 1.1% to 1,333] and Japan [down 10 or 2.4% to 399].

 

Visitors arriving for holiday purposes accounted for 78.5% of total arrivals, 6.4% came to visit their friends or relatives, 3.5% came for business purposes, while 11.6% visited Fiji for other reasons.

 

Table 1 below presents actual numbers and the 2015 and 2014 comparisons of visitor arrivals for the month of May, January to May and 12 months to May 2015.

Note: Visitor statistics are released monthly using data sourced from the Immigration System.  The number of tables released is currently due to limitations in the new system which came on line in April 2013. 

 

Figure 1 below is a graphical comparison of Visitor Arrivals by Country for May 2015 and 2014.

In the moving twelve monthly numbers ending May 2015, the total number of visitors to Fiji increased by 6.7% compared with the same period in 2014. Visitors from South Korea increased by 41.2%; China [34.9%]; Rest of Asia [33.2%]; New Zealand [13.9%]; the United States of America [12.9%]; Pacific Islands [9.0%]; Australia [1.9%] and Continental Europe [1.0%].

 

Decreases were recorded for visitors from Japan [8.8%]; Other Countries [6.4%]; Canada [5.4%] and the United Kingdom [4.2%].

 

January to May visitor arrivals in 2015 showed a 7.4% increase over the corresponding period in 2014, up from 244,890 to 262,992.

A graphical comparison of visitor arrivals by country during the period January to May 2015 and 2014 is provided in Figure 2 below.  The twelve monthly comparisons is provided in Figure 3.
