PROVISIONAL VISITOR ARRIVALS - July 2015

Provisional numbers show that visitor arrivals reached a new monthly record of 79,494 in July 2015, surpassing the previous high of June 2015 (72,525) by 9.6%.

The arrival figure was 12.3% [8,678] higher than that of July 2014. There were increases in the number of visitors from the following countries; New Zealand [2,906 or 16.0% to 21,105]; Australia [2,181 or 6.8% to 34,424]; Pacific Islands [1,710 or 54.5% to 4,849]; the United States of America [880 or 13.2% to 7,552]; China [754 or 27.3% to 3,511]; Other Countries [156 or 43.8% to 512]; Canada [108 or 8.5% to 1,381]; South Korea [49 or 10.4% to 520] and Japan [32 or 6.1% to 555].

However, decreases were recorded in the number of visitors from Continental Europe [down 80 or 3.2% to 2,408]; Rest of Asia [down 12 or 1.0% to 1,145] and the United Kingdom [down 6 or 0.4% to 1,532].

Visitors arriving for holiday purposes accounted for 80.0% of total arrivals, 5.9% came to visit their friends or relatives, 2.8% came for business purposes, while 11.3% visited Fiji for other reasons.

Table 1 below presents actual numbers and the 2015 and 2014 comparisons of visitor arrivals for the month of July, January to July and 12 months to July 2015.

Note: Visitor statistics are released monthly using data sourced from the Immigration System. The number of tables released is currently due to limitations in the new system which came on line in April 2013.

Figure 1 below is a graphical comparison of Visitor Arrivals by Country for July 2015 and 2014.

In the moving twelve monthly numbers ending July 2015, the total number of visitors to Fiji increased by 8.3% compared with the same period in 2014. Visitors from China increased by 36.9%; South Korea [34.4%]; Rest of Asia [20.0%]; Pacific Islands [19.9%]; New Zealand [14.9%]; the United States of America [14.0%]; Other Countries [4.4%] and Australia [3.2%].

Decreases were recorded for visitors from Japan [7.4%]; Canada [6.5%] and the United Kingdom [2.1%].

January to July visitor arrivals in 2015 showed a 9.4% increase over the corresponding period in 2014, up from 379,427 to 415,011.

A graphical comparison of visitor arrivals by country during the period January to July 2015 and 2014 is provided in Figure 2 below. The twelve monthly comparisons is provided in Figure 3.

The majority of visitors to Fiji in July 2015 were in the age range 25-64 (61.6%), which accounts for the vast majority of the working age population. Children aged 14 and below accounted for 18.6% of the July visitor arrivals; 12.6% were youths aged 15-24 with the remaining 7.2% comprising those in the predominantly retirement age group of 65 and over.

Figure 4 below shows a significant gender differential in the age groups 15-19, 20-24, 25-29, 45-49, 50-54 and 65+ ;
