PROVISIONAL VISITOR ARRIVALS - August 2015

Provisional numbers show that visitor arrivals for August 2015 totaled 73,332 an increase of 5.3% compared to a year earlier.

There were increases in the number of visitors from the following countries; China [1,968 or 89.5% to 4,167]; New Zealand [1,472 or 8.9% to 17,952]; Pacific Islands [695 or 20.5% to 4,093]; Rest of Asia [400 or 45.6% to 1,277]; Continental Europe [316 or 11.5% to 3,062] and South Korea [10 or 3.2% to 327].

However, decreases were recorded in the number of visitors from Australia [down 455 or 1.4% to 33,154]; Other Countries [down 198 or 25.4% to 580]; Canada [down 182 or 14.5% to 1,069]; Japan [down 168 or 18.2% to 754]; the United States of America [down 134 or 2.4% to 5,508] and the United Kingdom [down 24 or 1.7% to 1,389].

Visitors arriving for holiday purposes accounted for 80.7% of total arrivals, 5.6% came to visit their friends or relatives, 3.3% came for business purposes, while 10.4% visited Fiji for other reasons.

Table 1 below presents actual numbers and the 2015 and 2014 comparisons of visitor arrivals for the month of August, January to August and 12 months to August 2015.

Note: Visitor statistics are released monthly using data sourced from the Immigration System. The number of tables released is currently due to limitations in the new system which came on line in April 2013.

Figure 1 below is a graphical comparison of Visitor Arrivals by Country for August 2015 and 2014.

In the moving twelve monthly numbers ending August 2015, the total number of visitors to Fiji increased by 8.3% compared with the same period in 2014. Visitors from China increased by 42.8%; South Korea [35.6%]; Rest of Asia [24.2%]; Pacific Islands [21.4%]; New Zealand [14.0%]; the United States of America [12.4%]; Australia [2.9%] and Continental Europe [1.1%].

Decreases were recorded for visitors from Japan [6.9%]; Canada [6.7%]; the United Kingdom [1.7%] and Other Countries [0.6%].

January to August visitor arrivals in 2015 showed a 8.7% increase over the corresponding period in 2014, up from 449,059 to 488,343.

A graphical comparison of visitor arrivals by country during the period January to August 2015 and 2014 is provided in Figure 2 below. The twelve monthly comparisons is provided in Figure 3.

The majority of visitors to Fiji in August 2015 were in the age range 25-64 (66.5%), which accounts for the vast majority of the working age population. Children aged 14 and below accounted for 16.8% of the August visitor arrivals; 8.3% were youths aged 15-24 with the remaining 8.4% comprising those in the predominantly retirement age group of 65 and over.

Figure 4 below shows a significant gender differential in the age groups 15-19, 20-24, 25-29, 40-44, 45-49 and 65+;

Visitors by Occupation

The top 5 Occupational Groups for visitors engaged in gainful employment in their home countries are as follows;

  1. Professional Workers - 11,137
  2. Legislators - 9,890
  3. Technician and Related Workers - 7,511
  4. Service Workers 4,175
  5. Clerical Workers - 3,982

Visitors who are not in the labour force were categorised into two major groups. The categories and numbers are as follows;

  1. Retirees, Housewives, Children & Others – 14,417
  2. Students - 10,360
