PROVISIONAL VISITOR ARRIVALS - November 2015

Provisional numbers show that visitor arrivals for November 2015 reached a record 59,579 an increase of 7.4% compared to a year earlier.

There were increases in the number of visitors from the following countries; Australia [1,207 or 4.3% to 29,109]; New Zealand [1,042 or 12.5% to 9,354]; the United States of America [834 or 17.4% to 5,619]; Pacific Islands [490 or 12.5% to 4,421]; South Korea [212 or 37.3% to 781]; Continental Europe [205 or 8.1% to 2,734]; China [123 or 4.1% to 3,136]; Canada [117 or 12.1% to 1,084]; Japan [75 or 22.3% to 411] and Other Countries [14 or 3.5% to 415].

However, decreases were recorded in the number of visitors from Rest of Asia [down 154 or 11.2% to 1,217] and the United Kingdom [down 79 or 5.7% to 1,298].

Visitors arriving for holiday purposes accounted for 78.3% of total arrivals, 6.3% came to visit their friends or relatives, 4.3% came for business purposes, while 11.1% visited Fiji for other reasons.

Table1 below presents actual numbers and the 2015 and 2014 comparisons of visitor arrivals for the month of November, January to November and 12 months to November 2015.

Note: Visitor statistics are released monthly using data sourced from the Immigration System. The number of tables released is currently due to limitations in the new system which came on line in April 2013.

Figure 1 below is a graphical comparison of Visitor Arrivals by Country for November 2015 and 2014.

In the moving twelve monthly numbers ending November 2015, the total number of visitors to Fiji increased by 8.8% compared with the same period in 2014. Visitors from China increased by 39.7%; South Korea [27.7%]; Pacific Islands [23.1%]; New Zealand [12.9%]; Rest of Asia [12.4%]; the United States of America and Other Countries [9.8%]; Australia [4.5%]; Continental Europe [1.6%] and Japan [1.1%].

Decreases were recorded for visitors from Canada and the United Kingdom by [5.4%] and [2.3%] respectively.

January to November visitor arrivals in 2015 showed a 8.8% increase over the corresponding period in 2014, up from 633,150 to 688,884.
A graphical comparison of visitor arrivals by country during the period January to November 2015 and 2014 is provided in Figure 2 below. The twelve monthly comparisons is provided in Figure 3.

The majority of visitors to Fiji in November 2015 were in the age range 25-64 (66.0%), which accounts for the vast majority of the working age population. Children aged 14 and below accounted for 11.2% of the November visitor arrivals; 14.6% were youths aged 15-24 with the remaining 8.2% comprising those in the predominantly retirement age group of 65 and over.

Figure 4 below shows a significant gender differential in the age groups 15-19, 20-24, 25-29, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49 and 65+;

Visitors by Occupation

The top 5 Occupational Groups for visitors engaged in gainful employment in their home countries are as follows;

  1. Professional Workers – 10,460
  2. Legislators – 8,085
  3. Technician and Related Workers – 7,795
  4. Service Workers – 5,072
  5. Craft Workers – 2,890

Visitors who are not in the labour force were categorised into two major groups. The categories and numbers are as follows;

  1. Retirees, Housewives, Children & Others – 11,093
  2. Students – 9,793
