PROVISIONAL VISITOR ARRIVALS - 2015

2015 Highlights:

  • Fiji’s annual Visitor Arrival number reached a new high of 754,835 in 2015. This was 9.0% more than the previous record of 692,630 in 2014.
  • Contributing to the record level of visitor arrivals in 2015 were the significant increases in arrivals from Australia (18,056 to 367,273), New Zealand (14,569 to 138,537), China (11,841 to 40,174), Pacific Islands (9,272 to 48,570), USA (5,907 to 67,831), Rest of Asia (1,965 to 14,381), South Korea (1,024 to 6,700), Continental Europe (610 to 31,195) and Japan (204 to 6,092).
  • The 2015 visitor numbers from Australia (367,273) and New Zealand (138,537) were the highest ever in a given year and these totals equate to average daily arrivals of 1,006 and 380 respectively.
  • Visitors arriving for holiday purposes totaled 594,749 (78.8%), 46,794 (6.2%) came to visit friends or relatives, 25,048 (3.3%) came for business purposes while 88,244 (11.7%) visited Fiji for other reasons.

The Table below presents arrival numbers by country for the years 2013 - 2015.

Note: Visitor statistics are released monthly using data sourced from the Immigration System. The number of tables released is currently limited due to the new system which came on line in April 2013.

Figure 1 below is a graphical representation of Visitor Arrivals by Country for the year 2015 and 2014.

The July visitor arrival number of 79,494 was the highest in 2015, followed by the months of August and June with arrival figures of 73,332 and 72,525 respectively.

The peak arrival months by country and number were as follows;

  1. Australia – September with 36,913 visitors
  2. New Zealand – July with 21,105 visitors
  3. United States of America – June with 8,063 visitors
  4. United Kingdom – March with 1,771 visitors
  5. Canada – July with 1,381 visitors

December Visitors by Gender and Age

The majority of visitors to Fiji in December 2015 were in the age range 25-64 (62.3%), which accounts for the vast majority of the working age population. Children aged 14 and below accounted for 17.8% of the December visitor arrivals; 14.1% were youths aged 15-24 with the remaining 5.8% comprising those in the predominantly retirement age group of 65 and over.

Figure 4 below shows a significant gender differential in the age groups 15-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34 and 65+.

December Visitors by Occupation

The top 5 Occupational Groups for visitors engaged in gainful employment in their home countries are as follows;

  1. Professional Workers – 11,439
  2. Legislators – 8,424
  3. Technician and Related Workers – 7,410
  4. Service Workers – 4,908
  5. Craft and Related Workers – 2,991

Visitors who are not in the labour force were categorised into two major groups. The categories and numbers are as follows;

  1. Retirees, Housewives, Children & Others – 11,731
  2. Students – 14,967
