PROVISIONAL VISITOR ARRIVALS - June 2016

Provisional numbers show that visitor arrivals for June 2016 totaled 73,112 an increase of 0.8% compared to a year earlier.

There were increases in the number of visitors from the following countries; New Zealand [2,114 or 14.4% to 16,833]; Rest of Asia [883 or 95.6% to 1,807]; China [479 or 15.5% to 3,573]; South Korea [150 or 30.2% to 646]; the United States of America [138 or 1.7% to 8,201]; the United Kingdom [82 or 6.4% to 1,355] and Canada [50 or 7.0% to 762].

However, decreases were recorded in the number of visitors from Australia [down 2,899 or 8.1% to 32,796]; Pacific Islands [down 229 or 5.4% to 4,026]; Other Countries [down 87 or 21.5% to 317]; Japan [down 60 or 12.0% to 441] and Continental Europe [down 34 or 1.4% to 2,355].

Visitors arriving for holiday purposes accounted for 78.4% of total arrivals, 7.0% came to visit their friends or relatives, 3.8% came for business purposes, while 10.8% visited Fiji for other reasons.

Table1 below presents provisional numbers and the 2016 and 2015 comparisons of visitor arrivals for the month of June, January to June and 12 months to June 2016.

Note: Visitor statistics are released monthly using data sourced from the Immigration System. The number of tables released is currently due to limitations in the new system which came on line in April 2013.

Figure 1 below is a graphical comparison of Visitor Arrivals by Country for June 2016 and 2015.

In the moving twelve monthly numbers ending June 2016, the total number of visitors to Fiji increased by 6.9% compared with the same period in 2015. Visitors from China increased by 33.9%; Rest of Asia [26.7%]; New Zealand [14.3%]; Pacific Islands [14.2%]; South Korea [13.4%]; the United States of America [3.7%]; Continental Europe [2.6%]; Australia [2.2%] and Japan [1.3%].

Decreases were recorded for visitors from Other Countries [24.8%]; Canada [3.9%] and the United Kingdom [0.9%].

January to June visitor arrivals in 2016 showed a 4.2% increase over the corresponding period in 2015, up from 335,517 to 349,709.

A graphical comparison of visitor arrivals by country during the period January to June 2016 and 2015 is provided in Figure 2 below. The twelve monthly comparison is provided in Figure 3.

The majority of visitors to Fiji in June 2016 were in the age range 25-64 (63.8%), which accounts for the vast majority of the working age population. Children aged 14 and below accounted for 16.1% of the June visitor arrivals; 12.5% were youths aged 15-24 with the remaining 7.6% comprising those in the predominantly retirement age group of 65 and over.

Figure 4 below shows a significant gender differential in the age groups 15-19, 20-24, 25-29, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54 and 65+;

Visitors by Occupation

The top 5 Occupational Groups for visitors engaged in gainful employment in their home countries are as follows;

  1. Professional Workers – 13,769
  2. Legislators – 9,929
  3. Technician and Related Workers – 7,053
  4. Service Workers – 5,903
  5. Craft Workers – 3,084

Visitors who are not in the labour force were categorised into two major groups. The categories and numbers are as follows;

  1. Students – 15,120
  2. Retirees, Housewives, Children & Others – 13,371
