PROVISIONAL VISITOR ARRIVALS - August 2016

Provisional numbers show that visitor arrivals for August 2016 totaled 76,347 an increase of 4.1% compared to a year earlier.

There were increases in the number of visitors from the following countries; New Zealand [2,695 or 15.0% to 20,647]; China [819 or 19.7% to 4,986]; the United States of America [789 or 14.3% to 6,297]; Rest of Asia [485 or 38.0% to 1,762]; Continental Europe [364 or 11.9% to 3,426]; South Korea [305 or 93.3% to 632]; the United Kingdom [86 or 6.2% to 1,475]; Canada [59 or 5.5% to 1,128] and Japan [34 or 4.5% to 788].

However, decreases were recorded in the number of visitors from Australia [down 2,205 or 6.7% to 30,949]; Other Countries [down 287 or 49.5% to 293] and Pacific Islands [down 129 or 3.2% to 3,964].

Visitors arriving for holiday purposes accounted for 75.5% of total arrivals, 9.3% came to visit their friends or relatives, 4.6% came for business purposes, while 10.6% visited Fiji for other reasons.

Table1 below presents provisional numbers and the 2016 and 2015 comparisons of visitor arrivals for the month of August, January to August and 12 months to August 2016.

Note: Visitor statistics are released monthly using data sourced from the Immigration System. The number of tables released is currently due to limitations in the new system which came on line in April 2013.

Figure 1 below is a graphical comparison of Visitor Arrivals by Country for August 2016 and 2015.

In the moving twelve monthly numbers ending August 2016, the total number of visitors to Fiji increased by 6.3% compared with the same period in 2015. Visitors from Rest of Asia increased by 31.3%; China [30.4%]; South Korea [19.6%]; New Zealand [15.0%]; Pacific Islands [7.2%]; Japan [5.1%]; the United States of America [4.9%]; Continental Europe [4.0%]; Australia [1.0%] and United Kingdom [0.7%].

Decreases were recorded for visitors from Other Countries [30.2%] and Canada [2.7%].

January to August visitor arrivals in 2016 showed a 4.8% increase over the corresponding period in 2015, up from 488,343 to 511,760.

A graphical comparison of visitor arrivals by country during the period January to August 2016 and 2015 is provided in Figure 2 below. The twelve monthly comparison is provided in Figure 3.

The majority of visitors to Fiji in August 2016 were in the age range 25-64 (67.6%), which accounts for the vast majority of the working age population. Children aged 14 and below accounted for 15.5% of the August visitor arrivals; 8.5% were from the predominantly retirement age group of 65 and over with the remaining 8.4% comprising youths aged 15-24.

Figure 4 below shows a significant gender differential in the age groups 20-24, 25-29, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, and 65+;

Visitors by Occupation

The top 5 Occupational Groups for visitors engaged in gainful employment in their home countries are as follows;

  1. Professional Workers – 14,800
  2. Legislators – 11,692
  3. Service Workers – 7,283
  4. Technician and Related Workers – 7,220
  5. Craft Workers – 3,627

Visitors who are not in the labour force were categorised into two major groups. The categories and numbers are as follows;

  1. Retirees, Housewives, Children & Others – 14,506
  2. Students – 12,080
