PROVISIONAL VISITOR ARRIVALS - October 2016

Provisional numbers show that visitor arrivals for October 2016 totaled 73,595 an increase of 6.5% compared to a year earlier.

There were increases in the number of visitors from the following countries; New Zealand [1,779 or 13.7% to 14,732]; China [919 or 26.6% to 4,377]; Australia [618 or 1.8% to 35,804]; Rest of Asia [566 or 46.5% to 1,783]; Pacific Islands [411 or 10.9% to 4,194]; Canada [356 or 45.5% to 1,138]; South Korea [124 or 19.5% to 761] and the United Kingdom [38 or 3.0% to 1,284].

However, decreases were recorded in the number of visitors from the United States of America [down 119 or 2.0% to 5,952]; Other Countries [down 114 or 28.4% to 288]; Japan [down 88 or 18.6% to 386] and Continental Europe [down 21or 0.7% to 2,896].

Visitors arriving for holiday purposes accounted for 77.9% of total arrivals, 7.2% came to visit their friends or relatives, 4.2% came for business purposes, while 10.7% visited Fiji for other reasons.

Table1 below presents provisional numbers and the 2016 and 2015 comparisons of visitor arrivals for the month of October, January to October and 12 months to October 2016.

Note: Visitor statistics are released monthly using data sourced from the Immigration System. The number of tables released is currently due to limitations in the new system which came on line in April 2013.

Figure 1 below is a graphical comparison of Visitor Arrivals by Country for October 2016 and 2015.

In the moving twelve monthly numbers ending October 2016, the total number of visitors to Fiji increased by 5.2% compared with the same period in 2015. Visitors from Rest of Asia increased by 38.3%; China [24.3%]; South Korea [20.5%]; New Zealand [15.7%]; Pacific Islands [3.6%]; Continental Europe [3.3%]; the United States of America [3.0%]; Canada [2.2%]; the United Kingdom [1.7%] and Japan [0.2%].

Decreases were recorded for visitors from Other Countries [33.3%] and Australia [0.7%].

January to October visitor arrivals in 2016 showed a 4.4% increase over the corresponding period in 2015, up from 629,305 to 657,113.

A graphical comparison of visitor arrivals by country during the period January to October 2016 and 2015 is provided in Figure 2 below. The twelve monthly comparison is provided in Figure 3.

The majority of visitors to Fiji in October 2016 were in the age range 25-64 (68.4%), which accounts for the vast majority of the working age population. Children aged 14 and below accounted for 16.0% of the October visitor arrivals; 8.4% comprising those in the predominantly retirement age group of 65 and over with the remaining 7.2% comprising youths aged 15-24.

Figure 4 below shows a significant gender differential in the age groups 20-24, 25-29, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54 and 65+;

Visitors by Occupation

The top 5 Occupational Groups for visitors engaged in gainful employment in their home countries are as follows;

  1. Professional Workers – 14,986
  2. Legislators – 10,805
  3. Technician and Related Workers – 7,569
  4. Service Workers – 6,729
  5. Craft Workers – 3,825

Visitors who are not in the labour force were categorised into two major groups. The categories and numbers are as follows;

  1. Retirees, Housewives, Children & Others – 13,989
  2. Students – 10,523
