PROVISIONAL VISITOR ARRIVALS - November 2016

Provisional numbers show that visitor arrivals for November 2016 totaled 62,488 an increase of 4.9% compared to a year earlier.

There were increases in the number of visitors from the following countries; New Zealand [2,279 or 24.4% to 11,633]; China [724 or 23.1% to 3,860]; Rest of Asia [391 or 32.1% to 1,608]; the United States of America [228 or 4.1% to 5,847]; the United Kingdom [81 or 6.2% to 1,379]; Canada [70 or 6.5% to 1,154]; Japan [60 or 14.6% to 471]; Continental Europe [42 or 1.5% to 2,776] and South Korea [13 or 1.7% to 794].

However, decreases were recorded in the number of visitors from Australia [down 875 or 3.0% to 28,234]; Pacific Islands [down 55 or 1.2% to 4,366] and Other Countries [down 49 or 11.8% to 366].

Visitors arriving for holiday purposes accounted for 74.1% of total arrivals, 9.6% came to visit their friends or relatives, 4.5% came for business purposes, while 11.8% visited Fiji for other reasons.

Table1 below presents provisional numbers and the 2016 and 2015 comparisons of visitor arrivals for the month of November, January to November and 12 months to November 2016.

Note: Visitor statistics are released monthly using data sourced from the Immigration System. The number of tables released is currently due to limitations in the new system which came on line in April 2013.

Figure 1 below is a graphical comparison of Visitor Arrivals by Country for November 2016 and 2015.

In the moving twelve monthly numbers ending November 2016, the total number of visitors to Fiji increased by 5.0% compared with the same period in 2015. Visitors from Rest of Asia increased by 42.6%; China [25.8%]; South Korea [16.9%]; New Zealand [16.5%]; the United Kingdom and Continental Europe both with [2.7%]; Pacific Islands [2.4%]; the United States of America [2.0%] and Canada [1.8%].

Decreases were recorded for visitors from Other Countries [34.1%] and Australia [1.2%].

January to November visitor arrivals in 2016 showed a 4.5% increase over the corresponding period in 2015, up from 688,884 to 719,601.

A graphical comparison of visitor arrivals by country during the period January to November 2016 and 2015 is provided in Figure 2 below. The twelve monthly comparison is provided in Figure 3.

The majority of visitors to Fiji in November 2016 were in the age range 25-64 (66.0%), which accounts for the vast majority of the working age population. Youths aged 15-24 accounted 14.6% of the November visitor arrivals, 11.8% comprising Children aged 14 and below with the remaining 8.4% comprising those in the predominantly retirement age group of 65 and over.

Figure 4 below shows a significant gender differential in the age groups 15-19, 20-24, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54 and 65+;

Visitors by Occupation

The top 5 Occupational Groups for visitors engaged in gainful employment in their home countries are as follows;

1) Professional Workers – 12,649
2) Legislators – 8,710
3) Technician and Related Workers – 6,325
4) Service Workers – 5,700
5) Craft Workers – 2,881

Visitors who are not in the labour force were categorised into two major groups. The categories and numbers are as follows;

1) Retirees, Housewives, Children & Others – 11,007
2) Students – 10,874
