Visitor arrivals for January 2013 totalled 46,145, a decrease of 7.9% compared to the previous record of 50,107 set in 2012. 

Visitor arrivals from the following countries recorded a decrease, China [1,000 or 36.4% to 1,749]; the United Kingdom [317 or 19.8% to 1,286]; New Zealand [993 or 17.5% to 4,668]; Canada [144 or 12.0% to 1,060]; Continental Europe [253 or 9.3% to 2,464]; Australia [2,133 or 8.1% to 24,155] and Pacific Islands [12 or 0.3% to 3,571].   

However, increases were recorded for visitors from South Korea up [44.9% to 545]; Japan up [26.1% to 561] and the United States of America up [0.6% to 3,913].

Arrivals of Fiji passport holders permanently residing overseas was 1,838 compared to 4,845 in January 2012.

The table below presents actual numbers and the 2013 and 2012 comparisons of visitor arrivals for the month of January, six months to January and 12 months to January 2013.

In the moving twelve monthly numbers ending January 2013, the total number of visitors to Fiji decreased by 3.0% compared with the same period in 2012.  Visitors from the United Kingdom decreased by 29.5%; Japan [22.7%]; Continental Europe [9.4%]; Korea [8.0%]; Canada [4.4%]; Australia [3.0%] and China [2.1%].

Increases were recorded for visitors from the United States of America [3.1%]; New Zealand [0.9%] and Pacific Islands [0.4%].

In the moving six monthly numbers ending January 2013, the number of visitors showed a 1.0% decrease over the corresponding period in 2012, down from 350,356 to 346,847.

A graphical comparison of visitor arrivals by country during the six month period to January 2013 and 2012 is provided in Figure 2 below.  The twelve monthly comparison is provided in Figure 3.

The average length of stay for visitors in January 2013 was 10.5 days.  Pacific Islanders stayed the longest on an average 16.5 days.  This was followed by Canada at 14.2 days; New Zealand 11.3 days; China 11.2 days; the United Kingdom 10.7 days; Continental Europe 9.1 days, while Australian visitors who make up more than 50% of the total visitors stayed for an average 10.2 days.  Visitors from Korea had the shortest average stay duration of 7.0 days. Other visitors from our major markets had average stay durations ranging from 7.0 to 16.5 days.

For January 2013 there were:

  • 14,148 resident arrivals.
  • 12,533 resident departures.
  • 442 Fiji Citizens emigrating.
  • Ø9,918 Air Transit passengers.
  • Ø25,959 Cruise Ship passengers.
