International Trade in Services September Quarter, 2011

The services component of Fiji’s imports were valued at $261.3 million in the September 2011 quarter.This was an increase of $50.2 million (23.8%) compared to a year earlier. On the other hand the value of services exported in the same period was $563.5 million, which was an increase of $72.4 million (14.7%) compared to a year earlier. 

The trade in services surplus in the September 2011 quarter amounted to $302.2 million, $22.2 million (7.9%) more than the September 2010 quarter surplus of $280.0 million. 

Services recording surpluses were:

  • Travel services, a surplus of $280.6 million reflecting tourist expenditure in Fiji,
  • Government services, a surplus of $44.3 million reflects receipts for peacekeeping services abroad,
  • Manufacturing services, a surplus of $2.3 million reflecting earnings for garments processed in Fiji,
  • Financial services, a surplus of $1.3 million reflecting higher fees for services provided by financial institutions,
  • Maintenance and repair services, a surplus of $0.5 million from payments for such services provided to foreigner and,
  • Construction services, a surplus of $0.4 million due to receipts from construction work carried out abroad.

Services recording deficits were:

  • Insurance services, a deficit of $15.6 million attributed to insurance paid on imported goods to cover for damage or complete loss of freight.
  • Telecommunication, computer and information services, a deficit of $6.6 million reflecting payments for telecommunication and associated services such as internet provided to users in Fiji.
  • Other business services, a deficit of $2.3 million as a result of payment for business services such as leasing.
  • Charges for the use of intellectual property, a deficit of $1.6 million reflecting royalty and license fee payments.
  • Personal, cultural & recreational services, a deficit of $1.0 million due to payment of fees for audio visual and related services.
  • Transportation services, a deficit of $0.1 million mainly due to payment of international sea freight services.
