Fiji Population Grid 2026 - Fiji Bureau of Statistics

Population Grids provide objective, stable, and consistent units of observation that facilitate unbiased comparisons over time. While all spatial aggregations of statistics are affected by the Modifiable Areal Unit Problem (MAUP), regular tessellations such as grids, which do not conform to physical or social boundaries, tend to be more neutral and are well suited to efficient computer processing, including modern applications such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) modeling.

The Fiji Population Grids are derived from the most recent 2017 Population and Housing Census data, estimated to the year 2026. The Grids represent a high-resolution map that divides a territory into small, equal-sized cells and shows the number of people living in each cell. This method provides a much more accurate picture of where people actually live than traditional statistics tied to large administrative boundaries.

In this context, the Fiji Population Grid 2026 is aligned with the United Nations World Population Prospects (UN WPP) to ensure consistency with internationally recognized demographic projections. The main difference between the 2025 and 2026 Fiji Population Grids is a marginal increase in the total projected population with the 2017 based on the Population and Housing Census baseline. The Population Grids portrays data using square “cells” which represent 100m x 100m (1 hectare)1. Finally, the dataset is projected using the Fiji 1986 Map Grid coordinate system.
