[Base: Average 4 quarters 2008 = 100.0]
FBoS Release No.33, 2015
19th June 2015
The All Group Industrial Production Index (IPI) for the March quarter of 2015 stood at 118.5. The index is compared to those of earlier periods in order to gauge changing volumes of output from industrial production. For instance, the March quarter of 2015 index of 118.5 is 18.5 per cent higher than the base year (2008) index of 100.0.
Compared to the December quarter of 2014 a 10.2 per cent decrease was registered in the All Group Index due to lower volumes of production in; mining & quarrying, fruits & vegetables, dairy products, ice-cream, rice milling, flour milling, other grain mill products, bread, cakes, biscuits, sugar, sugar confectionery, starch products, other food n.e.c, animal feed, alcoholic spirits, wine, beer, wearing apparel, footwear & leather products, fertilizer, agrochemicals, paints & varnishes, soap & detergent, other chemical products, pharmaceuticals, other fabricated metal products, coachwork, building of ships & floating structure, jewellery, other manufacturing n.e.c, repair of machinery, repair of electrical equipment and water.
Compared to the March quarter of 2014 a 4.4 per cent increase was recorded in the All Group Index. Driving this increase were higher volumes of production in; mining & quarrying, frozen poultry, meat, canned fish, fruits & vegetables, edible oil, coconut oil, dairy products, ice-cream, bread, cakes, biscuits, alcoholic spirits, wine, beer, soft drinks, mineral water, yaqona, tobacco, saw-milling & planing of wood, manufacture of products of wood, cork plaiting material, paper, rubber tyres & tubes, plastic products, glass and glass products, cement, concrete products, cutting, shaping of stone, basic metal, casting of metals, other fabricated metal products, manufacture of furniture, jewellery, other manufacturing n.e.c, repair of machinery, repair of electrical equipment, electricity and water.
The All-Group Index including sugar and the All-Group Index excluding sugar both recorded a decline when compared to the December quarter of 2014. However, when compared to March quarter of 2014 the index shows as increase. Since sugar production is seasonal, most of the crushing is done in the latter half of the year. Given the significant weight for sugar in the index, an increase or decrease in its production volume is bound to impact on the overall index.
Industrial Highlights
Analysis of major industries are highlighted below. These should be read in conjunction with Table 1.
The mining & quarrying index stood at 203.3. The index showed a decline when compared to the previous quarter but showed an increase when compared to the previous corresponding quarter. Lower grades of ores being extracted during the quarter was a major factor that contributed to the decline.
The frozen poultry, meat and canned fish index stood at 121.4. The index showed an increase when compared to the previous quarter and also to the previous corresponding quarter. The increase in frozen poultry led to the overall increase.
The dairy products including ice-cream index stood at 93.0. The index showed a decline when compared to the previous quarter but showed an increase when compared to the previous corresponding quarter. The production level is influenced by market demand.
The rice, flour & other grain mill products index stood at 113.9. The index showed a decline when compared to the previous quarter and also to the previous corresponding quarter. The sales volume influences production levels.
The sugar index stood at 0.0. The index showed a decline when compared to the previous quarter but remained unchanged when compared to the previous corresponding quarter.
The alcoholic drinks index stood at 119.2. The index showed a decline when compared to the previous quarter but an increase when compared to the previous corresponding quarter. The production of this commodity is influenced by market demand.
The non alcoholic drinks & cigarettes index stood at 102.4. The index showed an increase when compared to the previous quarter and also to the previous corresponding quarter. The increase in the non alcoholic drinks production led to the overall increase.
The wearing apparel index stood at 121.1. The index showed a decline when compared to the previous quarter and also to the previous corresponding quarter. The production of wearing apparel are largely dependent on orders received.
The saw-milling & planing of wood and manufacture of products of wood, cork plaiting material index stood at 192.3. The index showed an increase when compared to the previous quarter and also to the previous corresponding quarter.
The paper & paper board, other articles of paper and printing index stood at 98.8. The index showed a slight increase when compared to the previous quarter but a decline when compared to the previous corresponding quarter. The production of this commodity is influenced by market demand.
The cement, concrete products, cutting & shaping of stone, basic metal and casting of metal index stood at 141.8. The index showed an increase when compared to the previous quarter and also to the previous corresponding quarter. The production of this commodity is dependent on demand.
The manufacture of furniture index stood at 96.7. The index showed an increase when compared to the previous quarter and also to the previous corresponding quarter. This increase in the furniture index reflects the increase in orders received.
The electricity index stood at 124.4. The index showed an increase when compared to the previous quarter and also to the previous corresponding quarter. The movement of the electricity index reflects consumption.
The water index stood at 114.0. The index showed a decline when compared to the previous quarter but an increase when compared to the previous corresponding quarter. The increase or decrease of the water index reflects usage.
