Provisional data shows that Fiji’s Net International Investment Position (IIP) as at 31st December 2014 was -$6,784.7 million. The amount reflects a much higher value of foreign investment in Fiji compared to Fiji’s investments abroad. The figure stood at -$5,878.5 million a year earlier.
Fiji’s international liability was valued at $9,972.3 million as at 31st December 2014. The breakdown by liability type was as follows:
- Direct Investment: $7,409.6 million (74.3%);
- Portfolio Investment: $346.2 million (3.5%) and
- Other Investment: $2,216.5 million (22.2%).
The breakdown for other investment by instruments was as follows:
- Loans ($1,384.3 million);
- Other accounts payable ($366.4 million);
- Currency and deposits ($269.5 million);
- Special drawing rights ($193.1 million) and
- Other Equity ($3.2 million)
Fiji’s international asset was valued at $3,187.6 million as at 31st December 2014. The breakdown by asset type was as follows:
- Direct Investment: $371.4 million (11.7%);
- Portfolio Investment: $146.5 million (4.6%) and
- Other Investment: $936.3 million (29.3%);
The breakdown for other investment by instruments was as follows:
- Currency and deposits ($619.2 million);
- Other accounts receivable ($257.6 million);
- Loans ($58.8 million) and
- Other Equity ($0.7 million).
iv. Reserve Assets: $1,733.4 million (54.4%).
Net Foreign Debt (NFD)
NFD is the amount derived through the following calculation – Foreign Debt Assets less Foreign Debt Liabilities.
Table 1: Breakdown of Debt
As at 31st December 2014, Fiji’s net foreign debt was -$96.1 million. The figure stood at $146.3 million a year earlier. The change reflects an increase in net foreign debt influenced by an increase in Loans. Some relevant details are presented in Table 1.
Net Foreign Equity (NFE)
NFE reflects the total value of Fijian assets in foreign ownership minus the total value of overseas assets owned by Fijians.
Table 2: Breakdown of Equity
As at 31st December 2014, Fiji’s net foreign equity (shares) was -$6,688.1 million. The figure stood at -$6,025.5 million a year earlier. The change reflects an increase in net foreign equity influenced by increase in liabilities (foreign investment in Fiji). Some relevant details are presented in Table 2.
Administrative and survey data have been used to compile the International Investment Position in accordance with the 6th edition of the International Monetary Fund’s Balance of Payments Manual.
