Findings from the Quarter 2, 2017 survey of Licensed Hotels, Resorts and Lodging Houses are presented in this release.

Compared to Quarter 2, 2016

  • The number of Rooms Available increased by 7.9% (69,667).
  • The number of Rooms Sold increased by 10.1% (44,779).
  • The Room Occupancy Rate increased by 1.0 percentage points to 51.3%.
  • The number of Beds Available increased by 3.5%.
  • The number of Beds Sold increased by 10.8%.
  • The Bed Occupancy Rate increased by 3.2 percentage points to 47.8%.
  • Takings from Accommodation, Sales of Food, Liquor, Telephone and Other Miscellaneous Charges totaled $274.9 million, an increase of 28.3%.
  • Paid Employment in the Hotel Sector increased by 11.9%.

  • The Room Occupancy Rate slightly increased to 51.3% from 50.3% for the same period last year.
  • The Room Occupancy Rate for the last 6 years has been in the range of (45.5%) and (56.4%).

Map 1: Key Points

  • The Quarter 2, 2017 Room Occupancy Rate slightly increased in all areas when compared to Quarter 2, 2016 except for Nadi and Suva Area.
  • Second Quarter data for the Mamanuca Area shows a slight increase to 59.1% from 52.2% in 2016.

Map 2: Key Points

  • Australians made up the highest percentage of visitors to the Coral Coast, Nadi and Mamanuca Areas in Quarter 2, 2017.
  • Visitors from United States of America made up the highest percentage of occupants in hotels of the Northern and other islands, including Kadavu.
  • Suva Area had the highest number of visitors from Other countries with the majority from Japan and other Pacific Islands.
