Findings from the Quarter 1, 2017 survey of Licensed Hotels, Resorts and Lodging Houses are presented in this release.

Compared to Quarter 1, 2016

  • The number of Rooms Available increased by 3.5% (30,111).
  • The number of Rooms Sold increased by 5.9% (22,776).
  • The Room Occupancy Rate increased by 1.0 percentage points to 46.0%.
  • The number of Beds Available increased by 1.1 %.
  • The number of Beds Sold increased by 3.1 %.
  • The Bed Occupancy Rate increased by 0.8 percentage points to 39.2%.
  • Takings from Accommodation, Sales of Food, Liquor, Telephone and Other Miscellaneous Charges totaled $179.4 million, an increase of 6.4%.
  • Paid Employment in the Hotel Sector increased by 9.7%.

  • The Room Occupancy Rate increased from 45.0% to 46.0% for the same period last year.
  • The Room Occupancy Rate for the last 5 years has been in the range of (40.4%) to (46.0%).

  • Quarter 1, 2017 shows that the Coral Coast, Mamanuca and Northern Areas recorded the highest Occupancy Rate compared to other Areas.
  • First Quarter data for the Nadi Area shows a slight decrease to 47.6% from 49.1% in 2016.

Map 2: Key Points

  • Quarter 1, 2017 shows that a large number of visitors from Australia stayed in the Coral Coast, Nadi and Mamanuca Area.
  • Visitors from the United States of America made up the highest percentage of occupants in hotels of the Northern and Other Islands, including Kadavu.
  • Suva Area had the highest number of visitors from Other countries and majority were from Japan and other Pacific Islands.
